FAQs
What is hand tufting?
Fabric is stretched on a frame, a design is applied and a tufting gun is used to shoot yarn through the fabric while passing either horizontally or vertically.
As you move the gun it leaves a cut loop at the back and a stitch on the front for every cycle of the gun. These cycles happen quickly -approximately 5-40 stitches per second.
What sort of yarn do you use?
Most of my rugs and wall art pieces are made using acrylic yarn:
Pros - affordable, wide range of colours. Very soft to touch.
Cons - not as hard wearing as wool. Will shed over time.
I also use 100% New Zealand yarn:
Pros: very hard wearing.
Cons: a lot more expensive than acrylic. A smaller range of colours and rougher to the touch.
Can you make a rug from my own design?
Absolutely. Send me a picture of your original idea and I will let you know if it’s doable. Please be aware of copyright issues. Very complicated designs are not suitable.
What size rug can you make?
The largest size rug I can make is approx 3 metres x 2 metres - or any size within that.
How much do they cost?
Cost will depend on the size of the rug, the yarn used and the complexity of the design. The more complex, the more time it takes. Anything with text or fine detail is always much more time consuming, therefore more expensive. I will give you an indicative quote when you send me your design.
Can you ship your rugs and how much does it cost?
Yes I can ship rugs. The cost will depend on where you live. I will give you an indicative cost when you place your order.
How do I look after my rug?
These rugs are designed as art pieces and should not be used in a high traffic area of your home.
Vacuum regularly.
Spot clean only. Do not wash as the glue holding the yarn together will degrade. If a thread comes loose, don’t pull it - cut it off with sharp scissors.
What sort of yarn do you use in your hand stitched cushions?
I use mostly 100% wool yarn. In some of my art pieces I will use other types of yarn for accent colours/textures.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
Yes - a downpayment is required before I start your rug. Price will depend on the design.
